Annual Physicals Q&A

What’s covered during an adult physical exam?

A physical exam helps identify changes in your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels that could indicate a chronic condition or risk of chronic diseases, such as Type 2 diabetes or heart disease. The provider also covers possible issues, such as substance abuse, sexual activity, the potential for sexually transmitted diseases, diet and exercise, and mental health. Men have their prostate checked; women may have their breasts examined and a pap smear.

A physical exam also gives you a chance to check in with your healthcare provider and ask them any questions you might have. Your provider will run a routine blood test to check your cell counts, but you can ask for specifics — such as a test for anemia — if you’re having symptoms. An annual exam also provides your provider with a baseline, so they can identify changes that may indicate a need for future concern.

I feel fine, do I really need such a yearly exam?

A lot of health problems don’t become obvious until they’ve progressed to serious levels. Regular screening help catch problems before they become irreversible. Sometimes, people become accustomed to feeling poorly and don’t realize how good they could feel with a little health management.

Does Dogwood Family Medicine do DOT exams?

Yes, we perform DOT physical examinations. DOT, or Department of Transportation, exams are required for certain drivers, including people paid to transport vehicles holding more than 9 passengers or those who carry hazardous materials in substantial amounts. Commercial drivers can be subject to certain restrictions if they have health problems.

What happens at a sports physical?

The sports physical includes a thorough analysis of your health history, including family history. Our provider also takes note of your height and weight, your blood pressure, your resting pulse, and your heart rate rhythm. The provider evaluates your vision and checks your major systems, including your cardiovascular and respiratory systems, for anything suspicious. They will also examine your abdomen, ears, nose, and throat. Sports place a demand on your skeletal system, too. So expect your doctor to check your spine and other joints for flexibility. Muscular strength and posture may also be evaluated. The intention of the exam is to make sure you’re in the right kind of shape to bear the exertion of your sport.
